American Airlines To Raise US Checked-Bag Fees By $5

American Airlines, looking to goose revenue in a recessionary environment, plans to raise checked-bag fees on U.S. domestic itineraries by $5. Airlines have been suffering despite markedly lower fuel prices as business and leisure travel slump. Just last week, American Airlines parent AMR Corp. ( AMR) reported a 21% drop in second-quarter revenue although its loss narrowed largely because of year-ago charges. The fees, first enacted as fuel costs were on their way to record highs, will rise to $20 for the first bag and $30 for the second on tickets bought after Aug. 13. T

Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines launch joint flights on routes to Africa

Lufthansa and Brussels are now offering codeshare flights on selected long-haul routes as part of their agreement to expand their cooperation and open up their networks to each other's passengers. The first jointly operated long-haul services are Brussels Airlines flights from Brussels to Entebbe, Uganda and the new Lufthansa connection from Frankfurt to Libreville, Gabon. Flights on both theses routes can be booked with immediate effect under the partner's flight number. Lufthansa passengers can thus fly to Entebbe via Brussels under a Lufthansa flight number. New pet airline gives Fido the royal treatment

What to do with my dog, Sophie. I rescued Sophie, a Boxer/Beagle/Pit from the doggy gallows in 2001 when she was about 3. She is, shall we say, a "special needs" dog. Sophie suffers from a mental condition called "separation anxiety," which is apparently all-too-common among shelter dogs. That means she flips out whenever she is left at home alone. She has been known to shred curtains, devour sofas, and rip up blinds. Not to mention urinate and defecate all over the house. This state of panic will last for as long as it takes for someone to return. Once I left her on my balcony and she leapt 30 feet to the concrete below. Fortunately, since she is built like a tank, her only injury was a scraped elbow and elevated liver enzymes.

Southwest makes wine, coffee upgrades

Southwest Airlines Co. has added two new wine brands on its flights, a spokeswoman for the company said Wednesday. While the addition of two new brands -- a Coastal Ridge Chardonnay and a Coastal Ridge Merlot produced by California's Bronco Wine Co. -- will not necessarily add new revenue to the airline since they're replacing existing brands and are still priced at $5 per glass, the new brands are part of an ongoing Southwest initiative to research customers' desires and to use that data to enhance the flying experience, Ashley Rogers, a spokeswoman for Dallas-based Southwest (NYSE:LUV) said Wednesday.
