It’s not a pretty sight at Chicago O’Hare. The Chicago Tribune reports that a United Airlines computer glitch has caused serious delays and grounded the airline’s flights at the airport. Look at the picture of passengers backing up at Terminal 1. The expressions on their faces seem a little bit tame to me.

The chief executive of Gulfstream International Group Inc., parent of a commuter airline accused by federal officials of crew-scheduling and maintenance violations, said he believes the company will be vindicated on a majority of the items under scrutiny. The company faces a proposed $1.3 million penalty for the alleged violations, made public Thursday by the Federal Aviation Administration. In emails Friday, David Hackett disputed assertions by congressional investigators that Gulfstream falsified flight-time records and forced crews to fly more hours than federal rules permit.

Today featured comment: Airline safety is a mess years in the making

From the beginning of commuter airlines, the major airlines and the FAA have sold the public a bill of goods. The promise, I feel unfulfilled, was that the commuter airlines (regional airlines) would be as safe as the majors. Yet, as we saw with the Colgan accident in New York, the crew were both low-time pilots. In aviation, flight time equals experience equals safety.

14M fewer fliers this summer

U.S. airlines will carry about 14 million fewer passengers this summer as a result of the global recession, predicted the Air Transport Association, an airline trade group. But airplanes should still be jam-packed this June and July, traditionally the busiest time of the year for air travel. That’s because airlines have launched price wars to attract passengers to routes where bookings have fallen off and have already grounded hundreds of airplanes in anticipation of weaker demand.

Singapore Airlines profit plunges as demand wanes

SINGAPORE (AP) ¡ª Singapore Airlines said its January-March profit plunged 92% as travelers cut down on trips amid a global economic slowdown. The carrier's net profit for its fiscal fourth quarter was 41.9 million Singapore dollars ($28.7 million), down from SG$528 million a year earlier, it said in a statement Thursday. Singapore Airlines flew 3.9 million passengers last quarter, 18% fewer than a year earlier. "Advance bookings indicate that the drop in demand for air travel is leveling out," the company said. "However, the probability of a sustained recovery has been set back by uncertainties arising from the Influenza A epidemic."
