Strike forces Lufthansa to cancel long-haul flights

The biggest German airline, Lufthansa, has cancelled long-distance flights for the first time since cabin crews and ground personnel walked out on strike earlier this week, a spokeswoman said. Airlines searching for extra cash to survive their deepening financial crisis are finding out just how valuable their frequent-flier programs really are. United (UAUA) and Continental (CAL) airlines already have cut deals this summer bringing them $600 million and $235 million in cash, respectively, for miles to be awarded in the future to users of their bank-issued affinity credit cards. Aeroflot Bows Out of Austrian Bid

Aeroflot has declined to participate in the competition for the state package in Austrian Airlines, considering the risks of the deal to outweigh its benefits, according to Reuters. Singapore Airlines soars to top of passenger satisfaction ranking, ANA, JAL decline

Japanese passengers selected Singapore Airlines as the best airline of the year, a recent passenger satisfaction survey found, while airlines from Japan lost several places from last year. According to the annual survey about in-flight services, including the quality of their hospitality, meals and amenities, Singapore Airlines was chosen as the best airline for the overall ranking list, followed by Virgin Atlantic Airways of Britain and Emirates of the United Arab Emirates.

Delta Air Lines increases some baggage fees

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines on Tuesday announced increases to some of its domestic and international baggage fees to help offset record fuel prices. The fee to check a second bag for domestic flights will rise from $25 to $50, and fees for items that require special handling -- such as surfboards or ski equipment -- also will increase on domestic and international flights.

Qantas says no danger after plane aborts flight

MELBOURNE, Australia (AFP) ¡ª Passengers aboard a Qantas jet that was forced to abort a domestic flight after a landing gear door failed to retract were never in any danger, the airline said Tuesday. A Boeing 737-800 of the Australian airline was forced back to Adelaide airport shortly after take-off late Monday, in an air safety scare that came just three days after a Qantas jumbo jet was involved in a mid-air drama. "Qantas flight 692 operating between Adelaide and Melbourne performed a routine 'air turn-back' shortly after take-off, due to an indication of one of the landing gear doors failing to retract," a spokeswoman told AFP.

Probe into Qantas blast begins

AUSTRALIAN investigators are considering the possibility that an oxygen cylinder could have exploded mid-flight on a Qantas jumbo jet that made an emergency landing in the Philippines with a giant hole in its fuselage . Australia¡¯s Civil Aviation Safety Authority said Qantas has been ordered to inspect every oxygen bottle aboard its fleet of 30 Boeing 747s. Qantas boasts a strong safety record and has never lost a jet to an accident. Its last crash of a smaller plane was in 1951.
