Japan Airlines to Slash 13,000 Jobs by March 2015, Kyodo Says

Oct. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Japan Airlines Corp. has decided to slash its group workforce by 13,000 by the end of March 2015, 4,000 more than its initial plan, Kyodo News reported, citing sources with knowledge of the company’s plan. JAL, as the airline is known, plans to reduce the workforce of the company and its consolidated subsidiaries to about 35,000, and cut the number of subsidiaries to around 50 from 120 as of the end of March this year, the report said.

Airlines raise fares

American Airlines raised fares on round-trip flights by $10 and was followed by United Airlines and US Airways Group, said FareCompare.com. The boost is the fifth this year and the second in two weeks, said Rick Seaney, chief executive officer of FareCompare. There were 15 fare increases in 2008, he said.

Congress votes: Regional airline safety

REGIONAL AIRLINE SAFETY: Voting 409 for and 11 against, the House on Oct. 14 passed a bill (HR 3371) setting higher training and skill standards for pilots of the regional airlines that link smaller cities to hubs. The bill is a response to the 50-fatality crash last February of Continental Connection Flight 3407 near Buffalo in which investigators are focusing on pilot inexperience and fatigue.

Honolulu-Beijing airline service delayed

Procedural delays have pushed back Hainan Airlines’ plans to offer service between Beijing and Honolulu. Hawaii officials had hoped the regular service would begin this fall or in December. But delays in the approval process from the U.S. Department of Transportation will force Hainan, and Honolulu, to wait at least until January.
